A village in Tangkak, Johor, recently witnessed a peculiar and distressing incident involving a group of otters. These otters went on a rampage, targeting ornamental fish in outdoor ponds, leaving the residents heartbroken and confused. The otters' feast resulted in the death of over three dozen fish, with partially eaten carcasses left behind as evidence of their destructive path.
Security camera footage captured the moment four otters invaded at least three homes, feasting on cherished pets like koi and red arowana. The owners, devastated by the loss, are now considering installing metal grills to protect their remaining fish from these aquatic mammals.
According to Lin Jin Yao, the village head, one owner suffered a devastating loss of over 30 fish during two separate night raids. Several residents also reported witnessing otters entering their compounds but fleeing at the sight of humans, adding to the mystery of their sudden appearance.
Lin Jin Yao expressed his puzzlement regarding the otters' origin, noting the distance from Sungai Muar and the absence of nearby wetlands. He reminded the residents that otters are protected species and urged them to refrain from harming or capturing them.
This incident has sparked curiosity and concern among the villagers, who are now grappling with the unexpected invasion of these wild creatures into their peaceful homes.
