In a surprising turn of events, the Cleveland Browns are diving into what could be a transformative period for their franchise as they move into Week 2 of a crucial 120-day timeframe, during which they are busy scheduling interviews for their head coaching vacancy.
This week, one notable candidate on their list is Mike McDaniel, who was recently let go after four seasons leading the Miami Dolphins. In addition, General Manager Andrew Berry has sought approval to interview Jesse Minter, the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers. If the Chargers face defeat in their playoff game against the New England Patriots tonight, this interview could potentially take place this week.
The Browns are also hopeful about their chances of landing an audience with John Harbaugh, who has identified three to four teams he is willing to consider for his next coaching role. The anticipation grows as teams vie for his expertise.
On Sunday morning, Berry introduced another name into the mix, as reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter: Nate Scheelhaase, currently serving as the pass game coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams, is now a candidate for the head coach position.
Scheelhaase is entering his second year with the Rams and has been instrumental as the pass game coordinator, following a season as an offensive assistant and pass game specialist in 2024. Prior to joining the Rams, he spent six years with Iowa State football, where he took on multiple roles, including offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2022. His experience also includes two years coaching running backs and wide receivers, along with responsibilities as run game coordinator.
Berry's interest in Scheelhaase is intriguing, particularly given that he has been primarily associated with offensive coordinator positions, most notably with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, rather than head coaching roles. This move might indicate that the Browns are eager to tap into Scheelhaase’s insights regarding their offensive challenges. His reputation for understanding effective concepts across the league has garnered attention; Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur praised him in a Sports Illustrated interview, highlighting his efficiency in identifying successful strategies throughout the NFL. LaFleur stated, "He’s a smart dude. One, he’s incredibly efficient with finding stuff around the league and what people are doing and keeping up with the times. He’s just eager to know not only what we’re doing or what the Houston Texans defense is implementing, but also to grasp the overall landscape of the league, which is a significant factor."
While it may seem ambitious to promote someone with just two seasons as an assistant coach to a head coaching position, exploring Scheelhaase’s ideas can be beneficial for the Browns. However, caution is warranted, especially considering the media and fanbase's skepticism about hiring highly intelligent individuals.
The Rams secured a victory in their Wild Card playoff game against the Carolina Panthers on Saturday night, meaning that the earliest the Browns could engage in a virtual interview with Scheelhaase would be Tuesday. For coaches still under contract, in-person interviews can commence on January 19.
