Who doesn’t love free gelato? But here’s the twist: this isn’t just about the sweet treat—it’s about a community coming together to shape something special. Spilt Milk gelato bar in Dickson is undergoing a transformation, and they’re inviting you to be part of it!
On February 5, 2026, the conversation begins. Freshly churned gelato, crafted with seasonal ingredients, is already a draw, but owner Omer Siddiq has bigger plans. When he bought the bar in 2023, he thought he was stepping into the gelato business. Little did he know, he was stepping into the happiness business. As Omer puts it, ‘I’m not just selling gelato; I’m selling smiles.’ And this is the part most people miss—it’s not about satisfying hunger, like at his other venture, Patty Smith’s, where burgers are the name of the game. Gelato is about indulgence, joy, and connection.
Omer’s commitment to the community is undeniable. From donating ice cream to school events to fundraising for local charities and collaborating with small businesses, he’s made Spilt Milk a cornerstone of Dickson’s local scene. But now, he feels the name no longer reflects the bar’s evolution. ‘The new brand needs to embody where we are as a business and our deep ties to the community,’ Omer explains. It’s also a chance to clarify that the Dickson store is independently owned, separate from the original Spilt Milk in Orange, NSW—and to avoid any mix-ups with the music festival sharing the same name.
Here’s where it gets exciting: Canberrans are invited to flex their creative muscles and suggest a new name for the store. Whether you drop your idea in the comments of Spilt Milk’s Instagram post or share it in person at the Dickson shop, your input matters. And the reward? The winner gets a free year’s supply of gelato—that’s a 1.5-litre tub every week for 52 weeks! ‘Imagine being able to say, ‘I named that store!’’ Omer says with a grin. ‘It’s a fun way to involve the community.’
But here’s the controversial part: Does a name really matter if the product stays the same? Omer insists it does. ‘The gelato will still be brilliant,’ he assures, ‘but by working with local bakeries and suppliers, we’re taking it to the next level.’ Bold claim? Maybe. But it’s a move that could redefine what a local business can achieve.
Looking ahead, the rebranded gelato bar will deepen its roots in the community, partnering with more local businesses and organizations. And while the name may change, the mission remains: to spread joy, one scoop at a time. So, what’s your idea for the new name? Comment below—let’s spark some debate! Is a name change enough to elevate a business, or is it just a marketing gimmick? We want to hear your thoughts!
Spilt Milk is located at Unit 70/2 Cape St, Dickson. Follow them on Instagram @spiltmilkbardickson and submit your name suggestion before February 13. Don’t miss out on being part of this sweet revolution!
