Everything You Need to Know About the Sequel to KPop Demon Hunters
The buzz surrounding the sequel to KPop Demon Hunters is electric, and fans are eagerly anticipating what’s next for their favorite animated K-pop group that doubles as demon hunters.
When this unique animated film premiered on Netflix in June, it quickly attracted a growing audience. As viewership soared and reached impressive heights, it became increasingly clear that a sequel was on the horizon.
EJAE, who lends her voice to Rumi, the lead singer of HUNTR/X, teased fans during a chat with E! News at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards, saying, "Stay tuned! Who knows what’s coming?" This playful hint sparked excitement among fans, suggesting that good news might be just around the corner.
Audrey Nuna, who voices the edgy character Mira, echoed this sentiment, stating, "We’re also waiting for that call about the sequel."
As if that wasn’t enough to ignite speculation, reports indicated that the animated feature had become Netflix's most-watched film ever, amassing over 500 million views by late 2025. The film also received multiple Golden Globe nominations, including Best Animated Feature, Best Original Song, and Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. With such significant accolades, it’s hard to imagine that the creators wouldn't capitalize on this success.
Rei Ami, who voices the dynamic rapper Zoey, assured fans, "As soon as we hear something, you’ll be the first to know." Her confidence only adds to the anticipation surrounding the sequel.
While there hasn’t been an official announcement yet, sources reveal that Netflix and Sony have finalized a deal to create a follow-up, aiming for a release in 2029. Although the thought of waiting three more years to catch up with HUNTR/X and their rivals, the Saja Boys, is heartbreaking for many, creating high-quality animation and hit songs like "Soda Pop," "Your Idol," and "Golden"—the latter having won the Best Song award at the Critics Choice Awards on January 4—takes considerable time and effort.
Producers remain confident in their approach. When asked about the potential for a live-action adaptation, creator Maggie Kang expressed her views to the BBC, declaring, "The humor and essence of these characters suit animation perfectly. Moving them into a live-action setting would feel too confined and unlikely to resonate with audiences." Co-director Chris Appelhans agreed, emphasizing that animation allows for boundless creativity, enabling them to explore ideas that wouldn’t translate well into a live-action format.
Kang is enthusiastic about the possibility of expanding the story, stating, "There’s definitely more to explore with these characters in this universe. I’m thrilled about the storytelling opportunities ahead. Whatever form it takes, it will be a narrative worthy of a sequel, something we all want to see."
For now, the team is relishing their current achievements. Kang remarked on the rarity of having the entire cast together, including Arden Cho, May Young, and Ji-young Yoo, who voice Rumi, Mira, and Zoey respectively, as they celebrated their two Critics Choice Awards. "It’s a special occasion when we can all come together like this," she noted.
While fans look forward to KPop's sequel, the cast is taking a moment to relax before diving back into work. When discussing their plans for 2026, they playfully joked, "Couch time is our priority!"
Until the sequel is ready to be unveiled, fans can enjoy the fantastic performances of the cast members who have spent the past several months shining brightly in their roles, embodying the spirit of their characters.
This journey is far from over, and as the anticipation builds, what do you think about the direction the sequel could take? Do you believe a live-action version could ever capture the same magic? Share your thoughts below!
