Professor Butzkueven, affiliated with Monash University and Alfred Health, has been a pivotal figure in shaping MS research and clinical practices both in Australia and on the global stage.
He co-founded and serves as the Managing Director of MSBase, the world's largest MS registry. This remarkable resource now encompasses over 125,000 patient records, gathered from 50 different countries. Imagine the wealth of data, the insights, and the potential for breakthroughs!
Professor Butzkueven's motivation stems from the people he sees in his clinic each week. He states, "I have had the privilege of being involved in the care of people with MS for more than 20 years, and that is really the driving force." He adds, "We see the unmet need. And that is a massive challenge and a great motivator."
His early career choice to specialize in neurology was driven by a fascination with the most profound, unanswered questions in medicine. He notes, "Neurology is about how the brain works and immunology is about how the immune system works. Neurology and Immunology are the greatest mysteries left in medicine - they come together in MS."
Through MSBase, Professor Butzkueven has played a crucial role in building an evidence base that has reshaped treatment guidelines, enhanced real-world evidence, and deepened our understanding of how MS progresses over time. He also leads critical international drug safety initiatives, ensuring consistent, high-quality care for individuals living with MS.
Receiving this award from MS Australia holds special significance for Professor Butzkueven. "MS Australia is one of the most respected organizations globally in multiple sclerosis advocacy and research funding. To be recognized through this organization means the world to me," he says.
MS Australia CEO Rohan Greenland acknowledges Professor Butzkueven's lasting impact, stating, "Helmut's work has changed the way MS is understood and treated, not only in Australia but internationally. His leadership in establishing MSBase has transformed MS research and strengthened clinical care for tens of thousands of people."
But what about the future? Professor Butzkueven remains optimistic, particularly in the ongoing search for answers regarding MS progression and the role of the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). He shares, "We are seeing huge interest in EBV and how it may trigger MS, and at the same time we are beginning to unravel the mechanisms of progression. That means better ways to monitor the disease, better biomarkers and more trials, and for that reason, I am more optimistic about that now than I was five years ago."
